Summary:

The Transportation Equity Dashboard is a tool for Canadian community action on transport poverty. Here, you can learn about key concepts related to accessibility, transportation equity, and the factors contributing to transport poverty. You can also map accessibility to important destinations in your community, explore accessibility disparities among different population groups, draw inspiration from case studies, access downloadable data for your initiatives, and more.

Highlights:

The Transportation Equity Dashboard is a map tool that harnesses data from Statistic Canada’s Spatial Access Measures (SAM), a national set of indicators that describe how easy it is to reach important destinations from different locations in your community.

  • The SAM includes measures for accessibility to schools, health care facilities, employment opportunities, grocery stores, arts and culture facilities, and sports and recreation facilities. For each of these destination types, there are accessibility scores for ease of access using public transit, a bicycle, or by walking.
  • Accessibility to destinations is not evenly spread out, and this has uneven impacts on different groups of people. So, the dashboard is equipped with an equity lens that allows you to map and explore accessibility for 17 population groups who may experience social disadvantages, for example, those experiencing low income, single parents, older adults, among others.
  • The equity lens also lets you highlight areas that could be at risk of transport poverty. These are areas with poor accessibility and a high concentration of residents from groups known to experience social disadvantages.
